Eight is an interesting number. Maybe all numbers are. But eight, there’s something a bit...unsettling. Two circles balanced perfectly atop one another appear completely at ease, innocuous, benign. But let’s flip it on its side. Now it’s the symbol for eternity. Then there’s Crazy Eights, a child’s card game. But you also have Aces and Eights, a poker hand aptly named the “Dead Man’s Hand”. We have “pieces of eight” and “eight to the bar”, “behind the eight ball” and on and on. A lot of words rhyme with eight that find their way into my stories: hate, desecrate, fate, only to mention sedate, annihilate and decapitate.
And a host of others. You can come up with your own.
